Dr. Yan obtained his bachelor degree and master degree in electrical engineering from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in China in 1985 and 1988. He obtained his doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering from Southeast University in China in 1997. He completed his residency training in Medical Physics in 2001 at Stanford University School of Medicine. As a medical physicist and an assistant professor, he became one of faculty members of Department or Radiation Oncology. He is currently an associate professor, the director of accredited medical dosimetry program and the director of Medical Informatics section of Division of Radiation Physics & Informatics.

Research Interests:

His current research interests include medical imaging and its applications in radiation therapy, treatment planning optimization, dose calculation algorithms,  Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), development of clinical applications, computer science and software engineering, DICOM/DICOM RT and Medical Informatics.

Clinical Duties:

  • Periodical quality assurance (QA) for LINACs, Tomotherapy unit, CT, simulator and GammaKnife;
  • Patient-specific IMRT QA;
  • Weekly chart checking;
  • LDR/HDR brachytherapy procedures including GYN cesium implant, MammoSite and prostate seed implant;
  • GammaKnife stereotactic radiosurgery treatment;
  • Supervision of medical dosimetrists;
  • Some treatment planning;
  • Medical physics consultation and troubleshooting.

  • Clinical training for junior medical physicists.

  • ePin. A free small application for film dosimetry.
  • PortalSim. A dynamic treatment simulation system for IMRT and IGRT (Patented).
  • PortView. A dedicated image reviewing system for radiation therapy clinics.
  • iPump. The Image Pumping Utility for BrainLAB ExacTrac and R&V system (patent pending).
  • ScreenBee. A DICOM screen dumper that links Tomotherapy and R&V System in Radiation Therapy Clinics (copyrighted).
  • DICOMan. The Universal DICOM Wizard for Radiation Oncology and  Radiology (copyrighted).
